Implementing Global Development Initiatives and Putting the UN Sustainable Development Goals into Practice | Tsinghua Southeast Asia Centre Opens in Kura Kura Bali, Indonesia.

On the afternoon of November 16, on the occasion of the 17th Summit of G20 in Bali, the opening ceremony of Tsinghua Southeast Asia Center was held in Kura Kura Bali, Indonesia. Wang Hongwei, Vice President of Tsinghua University, Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan, Minister of Coordinating Ministry of Maritime and Investment Affairs of Indonesia, Sandiaga Uno, Minister of Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy of Indonesia, Cherie Nursalim, Vice Chairman of United in Diversity Foundation, Gordon Duff, Honorary President of United in Diversity Foundation. Tantowi Yahya, President of United in Diversity Foundation, Wang Hui and Xiao Xi, Deputy Directors of Office of International Affairs of Tsinghua University, Zhang Jue, Director of International Talent Learning Centre (Southeast Asia Centre Office) of School of Continuing Education of Tsinghua University, Zhang Linqi, Directors of Global Health and Infectious Diseases Center & Comprehensive AIDS Research Center of School of Medicine of Tsinghua University , Zheng Yi, Head of Office Institute for Sustainable Development Goals of Tsinghua University (TUSDG), Yuan Wei, Secretary General of Tsinghua University Education Foundation, and representatives of Tsinghua University's alumni from Indonesia, and delegates from various sectors, including Indonesian universities and NGOs, were invited to attend the event.

Launching Ceremony

Wang Hongwei said in his opening speech that the Tsinghua Southeast Asia Centre is one of the important components of Tsinghua's global strategy. Tsinghua University and United in Diversity Foundation use the Centre as an exchange platform, joining hands with partners in Southeast Asian countries and regions to carry out talent cultivation and academic exchanges, and to put the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the Global Development Initiative (GDI) proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping, and the New Era Bali Kerthi Economic Roadmap launched by Indonesian President Joko Widodo into practice.

He stressed that the Tsinghua Southeast Asia Centre will become an important platform for promoting cooperation and exchanges between China and Indonesia, Southeast Asian countries and regions, and even globally. The Centre will develop in the direction of equality, coordination and inclusiveness. Tsinghua University has always valued cooperation with global partners and actively provided solutions to common global challenges. We will continue to explore new opportunities and co-operation to contribute to world development.

Remarks by Wang Hongwei

Cherie Nursalim remarked that the opening of Tsinghua Southeast Asia Centre marks the beginning of a successful partnership between United in Diversity Foundation and Tsinghua University. The Centre located in Kura Kura Bali is a global learning center that will provide a rich curriculum for people from all walks of life and serve as a powerful complement to their university studies. The Centre will also provide full support for networking, capacity building and spatial development of participants, creating innovative solutions that directly contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

In his speech, Gordon Duff mentioned that Tsinghua University and other universities with the best science, technology and research in the world are very welcome to come to Bali to start cooperation, so that the talent from all over the world can share with each other and come up with ideas to solve problems, and contribute their wisdom to create a better life.

Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan and Sandiaga Uno delivered speeches at the opening ceremony. They firstly congratulated Tsinghua University and United in Diversity Foundation, and said that it is of special significance to witness the opening of Tsinghua Southeast Asia Centre in Bali Kulak Island, thanked Tsinghua University for its contribution in the diversified cooperation between China and Indonesia, and expected that Tsinghua Southeast Asia Centre will become an important platform for Sino-Indonesian education cooperation as well as global innovation cooperation.

Before the opening ceremony, Wang Hongwei had a meeting with Cherie Nursalim, Vice Chairman of Giti Group and Vice Chairman of United in Diversity Foundation with other Tsinghua’s colleagues. The two sides discussed the achievement of mutual cooperation in the past four years under joint efforts, and thanked each other for their efforts and contributions to the official launch of the Center. In addition, they also had a full exchange of views on the development of academic exchanges, the operation and future development of the Center.
