On 9 May, 2019, hosted by the China Society for Sustainable Development (CSSD) and co-organised by Shandong Normal University (SNU), the Annual Academic Conference and Sustainable Development Forum of the Chinese Society for Sustainable Development was held in Ji'nan, Shandong Province. Wu Hongbo, Co-Director of Institute for Sustainable Development Goals, Tsinghua University (Tsinghua SDG Institute) and former Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, delivered the keynote speech of the forum. Zhu Xufeng, Executive Director of Tsinghua SDG Institute, moderated the Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs) sub-forum and delivered a speech. Yang Yongheng, Vice Dean of School of Public Policy & Management, Tsinghua University attended the forum.
Wu Hongbo delivered a keynote speech on the topic of 'Trends and Challenges of Global Sustainable Development'. He said that sustainable development is in the common interest of the international community, as well as a common aspiration that transcends different borders, religions, ideologies and stages of development. Moreover, it is an indispensable foundation for achieving world peace. He mentioned, 'The international community is fully aware that the current mode of production and lifestyle is unsustainable, and that if we do not change it in time, we and future generations will not be able to sustain it. There is no time to wait to save our Earth, and that all countries must make concerted effor......So far, most of countries have already integrated the goals of sustainable development into their national development strategies, greatly enhancing the stability and authority of the implementation of sustainable development.' He suggested that, in the future, we should include the relevant concepts of sustainable development in the curriculum, establish a innovative coordination mechanisms and a more comprehensive and specific set of measurement data. What's more, we should strengten the means of implementation, and push forward the review of the implementation of the sustainable development agenda by countries.
Wu Hongbo delivered a keynote speech
Zhu Xufeng was commissioned to give a presentation on the topic of title of 'Regional SDGs Indicator Construction and Progress Evaluation - Measurement of China's Provincial-level Sustainable Development Goal Indices (地区SDGs指标建构及进展评估——中国省级可持续发展目标指数测算)'. He pointed out that, 'in order to better implement the new development concept and measure the achievements of development, it is necessary to find a complete set of indicators beyond the traditional GDP, and to innovate evaluation criteria for measuring the process of sustainable development, so as to comprehensively measure the quality and effectiveness of economic and social development. In particular, for the United Nation 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development (2030 Agenda), it is crucial to build an indicator system for the SDGs based on the experience gained from the implementation of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals(MDGs).'

The 2019 Annual Academic Conference and Sustainable Development Forum of the Chinese Society for Sustainable Development consists of keynote speeches and four parallel sub-forums on sustainable development practices, climate change, SDGs and the transformation of green technologies, etc. More than 300 experts and scholars in the field of sustainable development attended the conference, discussing how to promote the implementation of 2030 Agenda and the achievement of SDGs by innovation.
