President Wang Xiqin attended the opening ceremony of ‘2022 Ministry of Communications and Informatics of Indonesia - Digital Leadership Academy Training Programme’ and delivered opening remarks

On 17th May, the opening ceremony of the '2022 Ministry of Communications and Informatics of Indonesia - Digital Leadership Academy (DLA) Training Programme' was held in Jogyakarta, Indonesia. The ceremony was jointly hosted by the Ministry of Communications and Informatics (MCI) of Indonesia and the School of Public Policy and Management (SPPM) of Tsinghua University, and co-organized by the Institute for Sustainable Development Goals of Tsinghua University (TUSDG) and the Cadre Education Center of Tsinghua SPPM. Joko Widodo, President of Indonesia; Wang Xiqin, President of Tsinghua University and Johny Gernard Plate, the Minister of Indonesia MCI, attended the event online and delivered opening remarks.

Joko Widodo, President of Indonesia delivered opening remarks

In his video remarks, Joko Widodo mentioned that the Indonesian government is accelerating digital connectivity and digital talent development in Indonesia through the Digital Talent Scholarship Programme and the DLA Training Programme. This endeavour can not be accomplished by the Indonesian government alone, and requires the concerted efforts and support of the entire country. He emphasized that digital transformation will be a national development strategy to lead Indonesia into the future at a rapid pace, and a major initiative to integrate Indonesia's future development blueprint with cutting-edge technologies, new perspectives, new ways of thinking, and new global business opportunities.

Wang Xiqin, President of Tsinghua University delivered opening remarks

Wang Xiqin congratulated the successful launch of the 2022 DLA training programme. He said that in the increasingly complex international environment of the post pandemic era and the rise of anti-globalization, China has timely put forward the Global Security Initiative (GSI) and Global Development Initiative (GDI), hoping to solve the global security deficit through cooperation and exchange and to bridge regional differences to build a Community with a Shared Future of Mankind. "China has timely put forward the Global Security Initiative and the Global Development Initiative in the hope of resolving the global security deficit, bridging regional differences and building a community of human destiny through cooperation and exchanges. In this process, the United Nations, the G20, the ASEAN and other international and regional organisations are expected to play a more important role.

Wang Xiqin said that Indonesia is an important part of China's 21st-Century Maritime Silk Road and an important country along the "Belt and Road" initiative. Since 2016, Tsinghua University has been actively cooperating with the Ministry of Labour and Ministry of Communications and Informatics of Indonesiaand other government departments in talent cultivation and advanced training projects. Former projects include the 'Co-Class Programme', the Master's Degree programme in International Development for officers from Indonesia MCI, the construction of Tsinghua Southeast Asia Center, the DLA training project, etc.  He hoped that the DLA training programme would become a bridge of friendship connecting China and Indonesia, and continue to promote mutual learning and appreciation, and strengthen exchanges and cooperation between the two sides.

Johny Gernard Plate, the Minister of Indonesia MCI delivered opening speech

In his opening speech, Johny Gernard Plate said that Indonesia's digital transformation means Indonesia's demand for digital talent is expanding, and the Indonesian Digital Talent Development Programme is a significant project that requires cross-agency cooperation. By establishing the Digital Talent Scholarship Programme and the DLA Training Programme, Indonesia MCI is accelerating the cultivation and development of Indonesia's digital talent and driving the country towards connectivity, greater digitalisation and advancement.

Delegation of Indonesian Government and G20 Digital Economy Working Group

The opening ceremony coincided with the second plenary session of the G20 Digital Economy Working Group (DEWG). More than 400 delegates from ministries and commissions of G20 member countries, including the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom, as well as representatives from Indonesia's political, business, and academic sectors attended the ceremony online or on-site.

In 2022, Indonesia MCI will cooperate with Tsinghua University and eight other world-renowned universities - Harvard, Oxford, National University of Singapore, Massachusetts Institute of Technology,Cambridge, Imperial College London, and Cornell - to provide advanced training in the field of digitalization to 550 senior leaders from the public and private sectors in Indonesia through the DLA training programme. Tsinghua University was invited by the MCI to deliver the opening speech as the representative of the eight university partners of the DLA Training Programme on the opening ceremony.

In 2021, Indonesia MCI and Tsinghua SPPM hosted the the first DLA training programme. The programme won ‘the First Prize of the Best Tsinghua University Continuing Education Programme’ in 2021. As the only overseas high-end talent training programme of Tsinghua SPPM wining this prize, the programme witnesses the unremitting efforts of Tsinghua SPPM in expanding global cooperation and strengthening the capacity building of international talents, and also fully reflects its important mission to cultivate international talents based on the new pattern of global development and governance today.
