Risks and Opportunities: Sustainable Development in the Age of Artificial Intelligence

International AI Cooperation and Governance Forum 2023, jointly hosted by Tsinghua University and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), recently concluded in Hong Kong.

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), as an international support agency, and Institute of Artificial Intelligence International Governance of Tsinghua Univeristy and the Institute of Sustainable Development Goals, Tsinghua University (Tsinghua SDG Institute/ TUSDG) jointly organised a sub-forum on ‘Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development’, which was chaired by Zhang Wei, the Assistant Representative of the UNDP in China. Top scholars and experts from six UN agencies came together to discuss how to make full use of the potential of AI to drive sustainable development and minimise the risks it poses.

This forum aims to discuss whether a global consensus can be built at the level of AI governance, especially at a time when AI is rapidly evolving and has both the potential to be a catalyst for sustainable development and the risk of triggering a rollback of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
