Risks and Opportunities: Sustainable Development in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
International AI Cooperation and Governance Forum 2023, jointly hosted by Tsinghua University and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), recently concluded in Hong Kong. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), as an international support agency, and Institute of Artificial Intelligence International Governance of Tsinghua Univeristy and TUSDG jointly organised a sub-forum on ‘Artificial Intelligence for Sustainable Development’, which was chaired by Zhang Wei, the Assistant Representative of the UNDP in China. Top scholars and experts from six UN agencies came together to discuss how to make full use of the potential of AI to drive sustainable development and minimise the risks it poses. If 2022 is a watershed year for generative AI, this year is a watershed year for AI governance. Will the rapid development of AI become an accelerator of sustainable development, or will it pose risks that could trigger a rollback of the SDGs? It depends on whether a global consensus can be built on the governance of AI, which is the core content of this forum.
