Former UN Under-Secretary-General Wu Hongbo appointed as Adjunct Professor at Tsinghua University and Co-Director of TUSDG

On 24 May 2018, with the approval of the Organization Department of the CPC Central Committee and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Wu Hongbo, former Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations, was formally appointed as an Adjunct Professor at Tsinghua University and Co-Director of the TUSDG. The appointment ceremony was held at the SPPM of Tsinghua University, where Professor Yang Bin, Vice President and Provost of Tsinghua University and Chairman of the board of the directors of the TUSDG, presented him with a letter of appointment.

At the same time, Wu Hongbo delivered a keynote speech entitled ‘Community of Human Destiny and Sustainable Development’. Professor Xue Lan, Dean of Tsinghua University School of Public Administration and Co-Director of Tsinghua University Institute for Global Sustainability (TUISD), moderated the ‘Meet SDGs’ High-End Forum No.3. Professor Li Ming, Sustainable Development Project Manager of UNDP, Professor Wu Yongping, Director of Tsinghua-University of Geneva Master of Public Policy in Sustainable Development (MPP-SDG) Programme, Professor Zhu Xufeng, Associate Dean of SPPM and Executive Director of the TUSDG, Professor Pan Jie, and more than one hundred other teachers and students from both inside and outside the university were present.

Wu Hongbo delivered a keynote speech

In the keynote speech, Wu Hongbo firstly started from the background of the concept of ‘building a community of human destiny’, and analysed the importance and feasibility of this concept and its intrinsic connection with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while integrating the current international trends. He pointed out that China should be more committed to: promoting the adjustment of international organisations and win-win cooperation; contributing China's wisdom and solutions to lead the development trend of the world; implementing the SDGs and sharing experience with the world; deepening South-South cooperation and the ‘Belt and Road’ strategy to promote the development of the community of human destiny; and improving international communication capacity, actively participate in international affairs. In addition, during the Q&A session, he also emphasised the power of the United Nations and the power of action, and actively encouraged more Chinese talents to join the work of international organisations.
