Professor Jeffrey Sachs, Senior Advisor to the United Nations Secretary-General, on ‘International Cooperation in Practising the SDGs’

On the morning of 30 November 2017, the ‘Face to Face with SDGs - Meet SDGs’ High-end Forum (Session 2) hosted by Institute for Sustainable Global Development of Tsinghua University (TUSDG) was successfully held in the ground floor auditorium hall of School of Public Policy & Management, Tsinghua University (SPPM). The event was hosted by Professor Xue Lan, Director of TUSDG and Dean of the SPPM, with Professor Jeffrey Sachs, Professor of Economics at Columbia University, Director of the Institute of Geosciences, Senior Advisor to the United Nations Secretary-General, and Chairman of the International Academic Committee of TUSDG, giving a speech entitled ‘International Cooperation in the Implementation of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)’ to nearly 100 students and faculty members.

Professor Jeffrey Sachs began by stressing the importance and urgency of achieving the SDGs, and he focused on analysing eight areas where there is an urgent need to put the SDGs into practice through international cooperation

1. International energy system transformation and global solutions for deep decarbonization

2. Transnational infrastructure development

3. Global governance in the field of technology

4. Land use strategies to secure biodiversity

5. National and transnational governance of tax revenues

6. Mobilization and implementation of international aid

7. Geopolitics and regional cooperation

8. Areas and mechanisms of global governance

He also expressed his hope that more organizations will commit to the SDGs and represent their countries in the international arena in order to find optimal solutions to these global issues.

Jeffrey Sachs Visits TUSDG

International students from SPPM SDG Programme, MIDG Programme, doctoral students and master's students listening to the presentation actively asked questions, and the guest speakers answered in detail on ‘The role of international aid in SDGs’, ‘Is there a way to implement SDGs between "short-sighted realism” and “long-term idealism" in the implementation of SDGs’ and so on. Meanwhile, Jeffrey Sachs also visited TUSDG and highly affirmed the progress made by TUSDG and expressed his continued support for the organisation's future work.
